West Bromwich Albion 1-0 Blackpool: Carlos Corberan earns first win as Baggies boss

Okay, Yokuslu was in the right place at the right time to head home the winner for West Brom

Okay Yokuslu came home with a late winner to give West Bromwich Albion their first win under new boss Carlos Corberan and just their third league win of the season.

The Baggies were closing in on 400 minutes without a goal from the Hawthorns until the Turkish midfielder scored five minutes from time after Blackpool failed to clear a corner.

Michael Appleton’s Seasiders produced a strong defensive performance against the hosts, albeit with little attacking impetus.

They looked destined for a valuable point until Yokuslu pounced and lifted Albion off the foot of the table.

It was a fairly low-key, tense affair at the Hawthorns. Albion fans, unhappy with the club’s owners, showed their displeasure by flashing their mobile phone flares as the stadium clock ticked 12 minutes – a reference to a reported £12m debt in outstanding loans.

There were few glimmers of light on the pitch, with neither side able to impose any sort of control during the first half hour of the game.

Karlan Grant really should have done better in the 32nd minute. The Albion man burst through from a flank position to reach the Yokuslu pass. The former Huddersfield striker changed defenders, only to shoot low into the hands of Chris Maxwell.

Kyle Bartley went close for the home side just before the break, only for his header, from John Swift’s corner, to be easily collected by the Blackpool keeper.

The Baggies continued to press after the break. Matt Phillips shot wide in the 49th minute after racing down the right wing and cutting his left leg.

Sonny Carey was lucky not to be penalized in the 53rd minute when he jumped on the ball, allowing Jed Wallace to take the ball. The Albion winger decided to send a pass across the pitch to Phillips, who cut the ball back to Swift – his shot flew over Maxwell’s goal.

On the other hand, Blackpool began to impose more of their own threat as the game began to open up.

CJ Hamilton showed initiative in the 75th minute when a penetrating pass from the right wing found him. His shot deflected into the corner. That was the best for the visitors.

Albion grabbed the win through former Celta Vigo player Yokuslu, who was quickest to react to a late Baggies corner which Blackpool failed to deal with. It gave Albion their first home win since a 5-2 triumph against Hull in August.

West Brom head coach Carlos Corberan:

“I think the team did everything to win three points. It was a well-deserved victory.

“We have a difficult situation. That won’t change after one win. We have to be ready to fight hard in every game to get the results we want.

“His performance [Yokuslu] was excellent, not only because of the goal. I don’t remember him losing the ball, and he really competed.

“We had to be more than patient, but we had to figure out how we can create an advantage. In some moments we attacked well, in some moments we didn’t do well.”
