LOS ANGELES, Nov 14 (Reuters) – Jennifer Siebel Newsom, the actress and wife of California’s governor, revealed on Monday that former filmmaker Harvey Weinstein sexually assaulted her in 2005. as he tries to build a career as a producer and actor.
On the stand in Los Angeles Superior Court, Siebel Newsom said she met Weinstein, now 70, at the Toronto Film Festival when she was 31 and had worked on several small films and TV production.
A few weeks later in California, Weinstein invited her to meet him at The Peninsula hotel in Beverly Hills for what he thought was a business meeting, she revealed. He was shocked to learn that he was supposed to meet Weinstein, then one of the most powerful actors in Hollywood, in his hotel suite, he said.
When reached, Weinstein did not want to discuss his plans, Siebel Newsom said. He went to the bathroom, called her and started masturbating in front of her, she said, before touching her breasts and becoming “arguable.”
“I was scared. This is not why I came here,” she said, often breaking into tears. “I just remember physically trying to go back.”
Siebel Newsom said Weinstein took her on the bed, although she could not remember if he took her there. Then he held her, she said.
“He’s just so big and so busy,” she said. “It’s a night.”
Weinstein, the man who became the face of #MeToo allegations five years ago, is serving a 23-year prison sentence for sexual offenses in New York. He is being tried in Los Angeles on 11 charges of assault and battery and has pleaded not guilty.
Siebel Newsom, known in court as Jane Doe #4, is one of four women whose allegations form the basis of the Los Angeles lawsuit against Weinstein. Prosecutors previously said there were five suspects.
Siebel Newsom’s attorney confirmed in October that Siebel Newsom would testify in the case.
Defense attorneys argued that all of Weinstein’s sexual acts were consensual and that the plaintiffs were comfortable with the “casting couch” culture to expand their careers in Hollywood.
At the time of the meeting with Siebel Newsom, she did not meet her future husband, Gavin Newsom California now, and said that he did not tell her what It took place until the allegations against Weinstein were announced.
During the trial, Weinstein’s lawyer Mark Werksman asked Siebel Newsom why her husband accepted the promotional offers from the actor. He said the governor returned the money after he told him about his encounter.
Weinstein, 70, was convicted of sexual assault in New York in February 2020.
In New York, Weinstein appealed his conviction and 23-year prison sentence. He could face up to 140 years in prison if convicted on all charges in Los Angeles.
