Raleigh Christmas Parade young performer dies after being hit by out-of-control truck; driver charged | Deadly parade accident

RALEIGH, NC (WTVD) — Raleigh Police confirm that a girl who was accidentally hit by a truck pulling a float during the Raleigh Christmas Parade has died.

Police say the accident happened around 10:14 a.m. near the intersection of Hillsborough Street and Boylan Avenue when the driver said he lost control of the truck. He hit the child at low speed, police said.

Despite efforts to save life, the child died. No other parade participants were injured.

The driver, Landen Christopher Glass, 20, faces charges of wrongful death by motor vehicle, reckless and negligent driving, improper equipment, unsafe movement and carrying a firearm in a parade. .

People said they heard the driver yelling through the window of the truck that he lost control and could not stop the vehicle.

“I just saw them go down the street really fast and you could tell it wasn’t like gas, like they weren’t on fire, it was rolling, almost down the street. They were freaking out , yelling at the people outside as you can tell they were scared,” said parade spokeswoman Melissa Stephens.

A group of people including first responders ran to the truck pulling the float to try to stop it.

“People came and helped hold it down, they slowed it down a little bit. They were trying to slow it down when it got to this point,” John Jones said.

Christy Curtis, Owner, CC & Company Dance Complex released a statement on Saturday evening:

“We are devastated. Our dance family is a tight knit group and today our hearts are broken. We are working closely with the authorities as they find out what happened and why.”

Raleigh Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin said her heart ached for the girl who was injured at the party. He explained to him sorry for the post on Twitter.

“Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of a little girl who lost her life today at the Raleigh Christmas party. Our prayers go out to her family, friends and CC dancers. & Co. The community is here for you as we try to understand and deal with this shared crisis.”

Governor Roy Cooper released a statement on twitter to share his condolences to the family.

“Kristin and I are devastated by the tragedy at today’s Raleigh Christmas Parade. During the joy of what should be a wonderful day, we instead mourn this family and their friends as we keep in our prayers. – RC”

“Our hearts and our prayers are with the family now and only with everyone who has been through this incident. The only thing we can do is ask people to pray now and lift them up,” Jennifer Martin and Shop Local. Raleigh said.

Raleigh Police statement on the incident:

“Our hearts go out to the victim’s family and those who witnessed this tragic event. The victim’s family has requested privacy during this very difficult time.”

The Raleigh Christmas Parade has been officially canceled due to the incident.
