With Round 5 in the books, 11 teams have booked their places in the last 16 of the Champions League as places in the last 16 dwindle. Some of them are familiar faces, but others are a bit unexpected. Port, LiverpoolBayern Munich, Real Madrid, Club Brugge, NaplesChelsea, Borussia Dortmund, PSG, Benficaand Manchester City have booked their places, but what do other teams need to do to join them in Round 6?

First, let’s look at tiebreaks if a team ends up with the same number of points. Things are a little different than general league play. The first tiebreaker is points in head-to-head games between tied teams. If the tied teams are still equal in their points in their head-to-head matches, then the goal difference in the head-to-head matches of the teams will go. Finally, the team that scored the most goals would have the advantage. An example is what we have seen Barcelona and Inter Milan. Inter beat Barca 1-0 at home and then drew 3-3 on the road, giving the Italian club four points in the head-to-head, with Barca picking up just one draw. This means that if they finish with the same number of points, Inter goes through.

If multiple teams are tied after going through all previous tied games, goal difference in all group games comes into play. Followed by goals scored in all group stage matches, away goals scored in all group matches, wins in all group matches and then away wins in all group matches. If that doesn’t work either, we arrive at the disciplinary points for each team and the UEFA club coefficient.
