Air freshener (Paris: AI) and TotalEnergies innovates, in terms of the conversion to a biorefinery of TotalEnergies’ Grandpuits site, to produce and valorize renewable energy at a low carbon footprint. Under a long-term contract, making TotalEnergies buy hydrogen produced for the needs of its platform, Air Liquide will invest more than 130 million euros in the construction and operation of a new hydrogen production unit. This unit will use a small amount of biogas from the biorefinery built by TotalEnergies, and it will be supplied with Air Liquide’s carbon technology, Cryocap.TM. These innovations will prevent emissions of up to 150,000 tons of CO2 a year compared to the current system. TotalEnergies’ biorefinery will use the group’s hydrogen to produce sustainable jet fuel.
In line with the desire of both companies to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, the project is based on a new sustainable and circular approach:
Air Liquide will build and operate the Grandpuits site new hydrogen production unit has a capacity of more than 20,000 tons per year. By recycling, in part, the remaining biogases from the Grandpuits’ biorefinery as a substitute for the natural gas that is often used, the hydrogen of this unit will be reformed.
In addition, this unit will include, from its inception, items Air Liquide Cryocap™ H2 carbon capture unit. This will help capture, for reuse in agri-food and industrial applications, more than 110,000 tons of CO.2 each year helps reduce the site’s carbon footprint.
Much of the renewable and low-carbon hydrogen produced will be used in biorefineries. produce sustainable aviation fuel. This hydrogen can be prepared sustainable travel in the Ile-de-France region.
Pascal Vinet, Senior Vice President and member of Air Liquide’s Executive Committee, in charge of European Industries, said. : “This new project uses the combination of several solutions to create renewable and low carbon hydrogen, contributing to the decarbonization of TotalEnergies’ Grandpuits site. It also allows to recycle CO.2 as part of the circular economy process when storing it for agri-food products. This project demonstrates Air Liquide’s expertise in working with its customers on customized solutions to help them reduce their carbon footprint and take an active role in the fight against global warming. It also provides another example of the key role hydrogen will play to succeed in the energy transition”.
“By recycling the biogas produced by the biorefinery into renewable hydrogen, this new project takes full advantage of the conversion of the Grandpuits plant to a free platform that uses the potential of biomass, especially in the production sustainable aviation fuel.” said Bernard Pinatel, President, Refineries & Chemicals, Aggregate power.“Combined with low-carbon hydrogen production and CO2 capture, this project contributes to TotalEnergies’ ambition to eliminate all hydrogen used by European producers by 2030.”
Air Liquide et l’hydrogen
In line with the 2015 Paris Agreements and to address the urgency of climate change, Air Liquide has committed to achieve a carbon neutrality in its operations by 2050. As a pioneer in hydrogen, the Organization is convinced that this molecule has an important role to work. success in energy exchange. Over the past 60 years, the group has developed a unique expertise in hydrogen, which positions it today as a leader in the production and distribution of low-cost and renewable hydrogen in the world’s definition of liquid hydrogen. The group is now starting, piloting and developing some of the biggest projects to decarbonize the industry on roads, air and ships.
Air Liquide has taken several commitments to speed up the development of hydrogen for the energy transition: The group plans to invest 8 billion euros in low-cost hydrogen lines from 2035 and to develop an electrolysis capacity of 3 GW in 2030.
About Grandpuits site of TotalEnergies
Commissioned in 1966, Total’s Grandpuits-Bailly-Carrois refinery was for a long time the only refinery in the Paris region. In September 2020, TotalEnergies launched a project to transform the site, in line with its plan to become carbon neutral by the year 2050. This free project, with an investment of more than 500 million euros, is based on the development of many futures. -work focused on the field of biomass, renewable energy, and circular economy: chemical regeneration of plastic waste, production of biosourced and biodegradable bioplastics, production of sustainable aviation fuel, solar farming and electricity conservation through battery. Construction of the new units will begin in 2022, and they will all be operational by 2025.
