2023 Independent Spirit Award Nominations Full List

“Emily the Criminal,” “Aftersun,” “Bones and All,” and “The Inspection” registered top nominations.

The 2023 Film Independent Spirit Award was unveiled on Tuesday, November 22, crowning the top winners of the past year in indie film. The awards ceremony is more than three months away – taking place on March 4 in Santa Monica – but these films gain traction in the months leading up to the Oscars and other awards. This year’s nominees were presented by presenters Taylour Paige (a winner in March for Best Female Lead, representing “Zola”) and Raúl Castillo (a nominee for Male best support for “We the Animals” of 2018). This year’s television nominees will be announced after December 13.

“Everything Everywhere All at Once” leads the nominees with nods in eight categories, with “TÁR” close behind with seven nominations, including Best Feature, Best Lead Performance, Best Supporting Performance , Best Screenplay, and Best Director.

In a first for Film Independent, this year’s awards focus on non-gender roles in leading and supporting roles in film and television. Additional awards include Best Breakthrough Performance (film) and Best Supporting Performance in a New Scripted Series (television). All performance categories, with the exception of Breakthrough Performance, can receive up to 10 nominations.

Earlier this year, the company also announced an increase in the prize money for eligible films to $30 million, with the prize money for the John Cassavetes Award now being $1 million. However, in response to the ongoing impact of COVID on filmmakers and the industry, Film Independent has once again waived the standard theatrical run required for approval, confirming the more time for independent filmmakers to be recognized and appreciated.

The Film Independent Spirit Award will mark the second time that the indie awards bloc will define their choices for the year in films. At the end of October, the Gotham Awards announced their lineup for the New York event to be held on November 28, with films selected by Spirit such as “TÁR,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” and “Aftersun” lead the pack.
